We know that the recent decision made by the Supreme Court in Alabama can be triggering, especially for those that are in a fertility and family building journey or have gone through treatment. It’s completely valid to feel upset, frustrated, and even hopeless. Please know that you’re not alone, and there are steps you can take to support your mental health.
Lissa Kline, Progyny’s SVP of Member Services, LCSW, and mental health expert shares her five tips on how to manage multiple emotions and your mental health.
- Recognize and acknowledge your emotions. One of the ways to manage multiple emotions is to recognize and accept them. Be aware of what you’re feeling without judgement. It’s also helpful to label your emotions and observe the frequency and intensity. This can help you understand and find the right coping mechanism.
- Limit your information consumption by setting boundaries. We live in a world with a 24-hour news cycle. It’s important to stay informed but it is just as important to set boundaries on how much time you spend consuming the news. Know fact from fiction and try to limit your information to official sources.
- Take breaks. Practice self-care. If you find yourself overwhelmed, give yourself permission to take a break. Consider the activities that will help you recharge. Go for a walk, practice mindfulness, or spend time with loved ones. Find what works for you.
- Seek support and ask for help. We want to emphasize that you are not alone. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, reach out to friends or family, a mental health professional who specializes in fertility and family building, or your Progyny Patient Care Advocate for support. Talking to others who share your concerns can provide validation and perspective.
- Focus on what you can control. Feeling stressed when something is out of your control is completely normal. It can help to focus on areas where you can take action and make a difference. This may involve volunteering, sharing your own story, donating to causes you care about, or advocating for change in your community.
