It’s common to feel overwhelmed after the arrival of a baby. After all, becoming a parent is a huge life event, and babies don’t come with an instruction manual! No first-time parent knows what they are doing, and even when it’s not your first, every baby and experience is different.
Over time, you will start to find strategies that work for your baby, family, and lifestyle. In general, here are some helpful tips:
- Try to take time for yourself every day, even if it’s for just a few minutes. It is nearly impossible to take care of someone when you’re not taking care of yourself. A quick shower, an extra nap, or a five-minute walk outside (without a baby) can do wonders for your emotional health.
- Ask for help. If your friends and family have offered to help, take them up on their offer. You don’t have to do it all by yourself. Your responsibility is to yourself and your baby, and it’s okay to have people helping you along the way.
- Find a support group for new parents. Many hospitals and birthing centers offer support groups for new parents. Your provider may be able to point you in the right direction, or you may be able to find one online in your area. Postpartum Support International, a nonprofit organization, offers a wide range of virtual support groups for new parents.
- Let your healthcare team or provider know about the difficulties you’re facing. Many clinics may be able to connect you with local advocates and resources to help you navigate some of the challenges.
- If you don’t live near family or have a local social network, or just need extra help at home, postpartum doulas may be the answer. They offer fee-based services to help manage infant care and household tasks during those hectic early weeks.
