Pregnancy brings many changes to your body and your daily life. Talking openly with your healthcare provider can help you understand what’s happening and what to expect next.
There are many questions that come up during pregnancy. The good news is that you don’t need to have all the answers already. In addition to your provider, you have your Progyny Care Advocate to guide you, answer questions, and support you through each step.
Preparing for appointments
Appointments can feel short, and it’s easy to forget questions in the moment. Preparing ahead of time can help you get the most out of each visit.
You may find it helpful to:
- Write down questions or concerns.
- Bring a support person if that feels right for you.
- Track symptoms, mood changes, or physical discomfort.
- Take notes during the visit and/or ask for written follow-up.
There’s no wrong way to prepare. What matters is that your questions get answered.
Asking questions at appointments
Questions will come up throughout your pregnancy, and that’s expected. Asking questions helps you understand what’s normal, when to reach out, and how to care for yourself between visits.
About symptoms and safety
- What symptoms are normal? Which ones should I call you about?
- Are there warning signs I should watch for between visits?
- What symptoms need urgent care?
About tests and appointments
- What tests or screenings are coming up, and what do they check for?
- What will happen at my next appointment?
- Can you explain this result in simple terms?
About daily life
- Is it safe for me to work, exercise, travel, or have sex right now?
- Are my medications, vitamins, or supplements safe to keep taking?
- Are there activities I should avoid?
About support and communication
- What’s the best way to contact the care team between visits?
- Who should I call if I have concerns after hours?
There are no “silly” questions. Asking them can help you feel more confident and supported throughout your pregnancy.
Advocating for yourself
You know your body best. If something doesn’t feel right, it’s important to say so. You can ask for clearer explanations, more time to decide, or information in plain, easy-to-understand language.
Advocating for yourself does not mean you’re being difficult. Your provider should listen to your concerns and work with you as a partner.
Communicating between appointments
Questions don’t always wait for your next visit. Many practices offer phone lines or patient portals for concerns between appointments.
Ask your provider about:
- How to reach the care team
- When to call right away
- What symptoms need urgent care
Knowing how and when to reach out can help you feel supported throughout your pregnancy. For urgent questions or symptoms, such as bleeding or severe pain, call your care team. Call 911 if it’s an emergency.
Building a partnership in care
Pregnancy care works best when you and your provider work together. Open communication helps you make informed decisions and feel confident in your care.
Trust your instincts. Ask questions. Take notes. You deserve clear information, respect, and support at every stage of your pregnancy.
