Talking about your needs at work can be stressful, especially as a parent. But being upfront about your limits is a healthy and helpful step toward less stress, for you and your manager.

Here’s a sample step-by-step guide, to get you started:

  1. Reflect and explore options. Take time to think about what work-life wellbeing means for you. What’s draining you, and what might help? Maybe working from home, shifting to a better schedule, or reducing your workload will make a difference.
  1. Prepare to talk. Pick a good time to speak with your manager — ideally when things are calm. Come prepared with a clear outline of what you need and how it could help you do your best work.
  1. Share honestly. Be open about what’s challenging and how it’s affecting you. Keep the tone positive and focus on how these changes could help you thrive in your role. Stay open to different solutions.
  1. Agree on a plan. Work with your manager to find an arrangement that suits both sides. Once you agree, put it in writing so everyone is on the same page.
  1. Keep checking in. You may need to tweak the plan to find the right balance.

While these conversations can seem scary at first, they help build trust. They can also help you feel better about managing your work and home responsibilities.
