Talking about menopause with your partner

Menopause is a natural part of life. But as a topic that's been taboo for so long, some people may find it difficult to share what they're going through with a partner.

If you're not sure where to begin or just need a couple of tips, here's a helpful guide to talking to your partner about how they can support you throughout the perimenopause and menopause transition.

Before the conversation

  • Make sure they know the basics: Perimenopause: What can I expect? is a good place to start.
  • Jot down your symptoms to make it easier to cover what you want to talk about.
  • Think about the kind of support you'd like. There's a "hug, help, or heard" model that makes this a bit easier to do:
    • Hug: You want a comforting physical touch and empathy
    • Help: You want active help with solutions or managing symptoms
    • Heard: You want your partner to listen intently, validate your feelings, or create space for you to vent when you need to
  • Be clear about your intent and what you hope to accomplish.
  • Find a time and place where you're both free and comfortable to talk. Make it a safe space to share and ask questions.

Try not to put too much pressure on this conversation - you don't need to cover everything at once. No one has to have all the answers right now either.

The conversation

  • Let your partner know how you've been feeling and how you're managing.
  • Not sure how or where to begin? Pick a symptom that feels urgent or is weighing on you the most, such as stress, hot flashes, difficulty sleeping, or lack of energy.
  • When you feel comfortable, bring up other symptoms like changes in your mood, weight, or interest in sex.
  • Let them know what support you're looking for from them, if you know.

After the conversation

The more your partner knows about menopause and your symptoms, the better they can support you. Keep communicating how you're feeling! You may even wish to set reminders to check in and keep the conversation going.
