Getting To Know: Sulay

A Patient Care Advocate

Patient Care Advocates (PCAs) are an integral part of a member’s fertility journey with Progyny, and we would like you to get to know them better. This week, we’re happy to introduce Sulay Thompson, a Patient Care Advocate.

Name: Sulay Thompson

What’s your background in healthcare/fertility?
I’ve been in the fertility field for over 15 years now! When I started, I was more so on the clinical side, where I wore many hats, but later in my career, realized I wanted to transition to the administrative side and become an advocate for patients. To me, this makes for a very profound impact in healthcare and is a big part of my job as a Patient Care Advocate.

What do you enjoy the most about being a patient care advocate?
I truly love every part of my job! If I had to narrow it down to two things, I’d say how the internal Progyny team celebrates each employee for who they are, and my interaction with my members. My members mean so much to me and being there through this entire process is really special.

What’s your favorite/best moment so far at Progyny?
I have a very close relationship with a particular member who has been down a tough road that included a cancer scare. Her test results for cancer actually ended up coming back negative and she was able to continue moving forward with her dream of parenthood through ovum donation. I was there for her as an advocate at such a difficult and crucial time in her life, and the special bond that formed is a great example of how much we care about the relationships we cultivate with members.

What does family mean to you?
Family means everything to me! I was raised by my mother and grandmother and things we’re not always easy for them. My mother is disabled, my grandmother beat breast cancer in her eighties, yet they never fell victim to their circumstances. They taught me unconditional love and support and the importance of strong values. I try to pass those teachings on to my members — you have the power to turn around any circumstance.

Give one word to describe the impact you’ve made on a member’s life:
Unconditional support.

What’s a fun fact about you?
I’m half Dominican and half Danish — Spanish was my first language!

What’s the last TV series or movie you binge-watched?
My husband and I love to binge-watch Law & Order: SVU.

Do you have any personal goals for this year?
My 2020 goals are to graduate with my mater’s degree and start a family!

Anything else?
Shout out to the other PCAs and our leadership team because I’ve never worked with a group of such incredible, caring people. Working at Progyny has been a blessing and I’m very grateful to the whole team! They are really shaking the healthcare industry, coming at them fast and furious!
